Grades 6 and up / Ages 11 and up Reviewed by Gerri Young Volume 22 Number 4 1994 September Leading the Way is a worthy, salutary addition to Canadian history. It consists of biographies of five important Black Canadian women followed by short bios of thirty-four other selected Black women in Canada. The first five distinguished women are Harriet Tubman, famous for rescuing slaves via the Underground Railway; Mary Ann Shadd, lawyer, suffragette, educator, writer and newspaper publisher; Carrie Best, poet, journalist, broadcaster, editor; Rosemary Brown, social worker and politician; and Sylvia Sweeney, film producer, television journalist and Olympic athlete. All these women contributed significantly to the life around them, and some are still very active. One thing they all seemed to share is an early vision or determination. They seemed to know as children that they would make a difference or wanted to change circumstances. One more name should be added to this list, and that is Rosemary Sadlier, the author of this book. She has three degrees, is president of the Ontario Black History Society, and has counselled, spoken, presented, and educated all across Canada. Sadlier was also a determined young person. The book is well written, interesting and easy to understand, with side bars of related historical information about persons, events or terms meaningful to the text. Leading the Way seems destined to do as the publisher wishes: "make a great contribution to Canadian understanding, and to the appreciation of the contribution to society by people of African descent."
