Northwest Territories by Lyn Hancock is one of a series destined for school assignments, but it could be more widely used. It comes in a very attractive package, from the shiny covers (Virginia Falls on the front, a polar bear on the back) to the excellent photographs on glossy paper and the well written text. It could be of interest to visitors and/or tourists of the Northwest Territories.

Lyn Hancock, an award-winning writer and photographer, lives in the NWT, and she has added her enthusiasm and pride to the presentation of the facts. It is this personal touch that raises Hancock's book above the usual school text.

All topics are covered, including geography, history, government, art, sports, the economy, and the roots, reasons for, and development of industries. "Facts at a Glance," important dates, important people, an index, and maps of Canada and the Territories, including rainfall, growing season and the economy, make up the appendices.

Historian Desmond Morton is the series consultant and this volume includes as consultants the director of the education system for the Northwest Territories and the director of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.

Northwest Territories in the "Let's Discover Canada" series (Chelsea House, 1991) by Suzanne Le Vert is similar in content and photos and, although shorter, is great for school assignments.

The Lyn Hancock version is highly recommended.
