Author Mike Nickerson is the coordinator of the Guidepost Project, the purpose of which is to "stimulate public debate" on the issue of sustainability. PIanning for Seven Generations is part of the Guidepost Project kit. On page 10 of the book, it is referred to as "a collection of ideas and information assembled to clarify the issue of sustainability and the possibilities if offers."

The book is divided into eleven chapters. It is informative from both historical and current perspectives on environmentalism and includes a variety of topics such as bioregionalism.  PIanning for Seven Generations also includes the list "Guideposts for a Sustainable Future," which serves to distinguish activities that are sustainable from those that are not. Charts and diagrams are also included.

The reader will find the text well organized and easy to read, although it reads like a textbook. The tone is encouraging if not utopian at times. The paper and binding are of a poor quality, which makes the durability of the book doubtful. The cover is unattractive.

Planning for Seven Generations might serve as a resource for students researching different approaches to the environmental protection issue. Its use in an educational setting is questionable and it is therefore recommended as an optional purchase.
