The "wild west" is full of legendary charaters engaging in legendary activities. We know about the gun fights, the trail drives, and battles. But they are only legends. As Andy Russell tells us, it was really ordinary people trying to do extraordinary things. In accomplishing this, they passed into legend.

Unfortunately, these are American and not Canadian legends and, as a result, we know very little of our own history. I bet that you didn't know that Canada's west was a s wild as the one south of the border, that ranching was carried out in Saskatchewan and British Columbia as well as in Alberta, and that cattle drives also occurred in Canada. I bet that you never heard of Jack Reid, John Ware or Happy Jack Jackson . These people and others like them helped build the Canadian west.

Russell is a true Canadian hero, having been a trapper, cowboy, bronco-buster and grizzly hunter. More importantly, he is a story-teller who transmits a love and understanding of the legends of the west. Supplemented by the illustrations by western artist Don Bresttler, Russell's  Canadian Cowboy is a tribute to the Canadian west.

This is a book that every fan of the west should enjoy. It is recommended for adolescents and adults.
