Wait and See, Robert Munsch's latest story for the Primary child, plays upon the fantasy of having wishes come true. In this story, Olivia's "birthday cake" wishes come true once the candles are blown out. Typically childlike, Olivia does not consider the consequences of her wishes beyond satisfing her whims. The results are humorous for readers of all ages. Munsch has once again created a story that will appeal to young children over and over again. As is standard in Munsch's stories, a pattern of questions is established early in the story, allowing the listener to join in with the reader. Michael Martchenko's illustrations are entertaining, especially the expressions on the neighbors' faces as Olivia's wishes come true and they experience the effects. To the reader well versed in Munsch's stories, however, there will be little freshness in content or style. On its own, Wait and See is a humorous story that will have young readers laughing. It is not, however, a must-have book for an established library collection that already contains several of Munsch's and Martchenko's earlier works.
