This book and "hands-on" activity for young and old is dedicated to "environmentalists trying to preserve our forests." Shar Levine, owner of two children's book and educational toy stores in Vancouver, is responsible for this informative and creative booklet that illustrates the steps required to make paper from any of the following materia ls: magazines, newspapers, wrapping paper, paper towels, napkins or cardboard egg cartons. Interspersed between instructions and ideas for using newly formed paper is much history about paper-making and the first paper. The importance of trees is stressed along with the environmental issues that face people today. From science fair projects to natural dyeing, the multi-level usefulness and appeal of this kit are commendable. To make paper one only needs the plastic paper maker that is included, some scrap materials mentioned above, a blender or food processor, a basin, an old towel and a sponge. Steps that require the guidance of an adult are specially marked so even younger children can participate. Each page has brightly coloured pictures to illustrate the varying steps of the process--from slurry to paper. The booklet provides children with opportunities to read an instruction manual, which is very important in our age of information and technology. I highly recommend the "Paper Book and Paper Maker" combo for the home and educational setting. The publisher suggests ages six to ten. However, I would expand that range to ages four to fourteen.
