CIP Grades 1 to 3/Ages 6 to 8 Reviewed by Pearl Herscovitch Volume 21 Number 6 1993 November Klee Wyck is a young orca who has been chosen as the mascot for the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. Her quest begins when the evil witch, Hagema, kidnaps Klee Wyck's younger brother and steals her Commonwealth medal. In return for her brother's freedom, Klee Wyck must find three magical objects and bring them to Hagema. With the help of the good witch of the sea, Otty the otter and Great Eagle, Klee Wyck is able to return the objects to their rightful owner, the good witch. Together they outwit Diablo the demon octopus, Sabrina the Steller's sea lion, and Skala the giant troll, and destroy Hagema forever. Throughout the story the author attempts to provide some background information on Vancouver Island and has Klee Wyck travelling from Long Beach to Nootka and Barkley Sound. Teachers will find this book a useful introduction to a unit on the Commonwealth games. However, its appeal will be short-lived and limited to residents of British Columbia and visitors over the summer months. The accompanying illustrations successfully portray undersea life. The paintings of the orcas and other aquatic life are accurate and the illustrator makes good use of light and shadow.
