The mothers of the babies are in every picture playing pretend with them. Both books have an established pattern, with the mother identifying the baby animal (based on the sound it makes) after the baby initiates the game. Jan Colbert maintains this same pattern in both stories. The illustrations by Eugenie Fernandes are clear and identifiable, but lack a more modern style. These stories would be of interest to preschoolers and students up to grade 1. Teachers could have the students expand the pattern by identifying their own favourite animal sounds. These two books would also be useful for starting discussions about morning and bedtime rituals. Young children may enjoy these stories because the stories depict their own daily activities.
