CIP Grades 4 to 6/Ages 9 to 11 Reviewed by Hugh A. Cook. Volume 21 Number 4 1993 September Gary and Bob are very excited. They have just learned that their Uncle Charlie wants their dad to manage a cattle ranch away to the north. They will be moving from California to four hundred miles north of the Canadian border into the wilderness of British Columbia. The chapters that follow relate the boys' adventures as they adapt to ranch life. As the boys learn to ride their horses and travel around the ranch they encounter many of nature's marvels and mysteries. They learn about the Canada goose, the coyote, hawks, ducks, survival of the fittest, moose, black bears, ants, nesting birds, jack rabbits, flying squirrels, porcupines, hummingbirds, owls, animal tracks, and the four Canadian seasons. All of their adventures seem plausible. Since I reviewed an advance proof, I am unable to comment on the overall appearance of the finished product. Of the twenty-two illustrations, half are a full page in size. The advertising suggests the book is suitable for children aged seven and older. Certainly seven-year-old children would enjoy listening to these stories but, from my experience, I would expect the readers would need to be nine or ten. Hugh A.
