These new titles are an excellent addition to the four original books in the "Endangered Animals" series: Endangered Forest Animals, Endangered Grassland Animals, Endangered Mountain Animals and Endangered Wetland Animals. Author Dave Taylor, world-renowned wildlife photographer and writer, explores four new habitats of endangered animals.

The similar format of each book allows for sequential examination of each specific habitat, such as the desert, an explanation of the various terms to describe animals in danger and then specific information on a variety of endangered animals in this environment. The discussion of each animal includes general facts, reasons for its being endangered, and possible solutions to prevent this animal from dying out. A fact box giving the animal's length, weight and where it lives is also provided. Beautiful photographs, many full page, accompany each page of text. Each book concludes with an article on preserving the specific habitat, a glossary of terms, and an index.

Endangered Desert Animals, Endangered Island Animals, Endangered Ocean Animals and Endangered Savannah Animals help broaden the reader's understanding of the different types of living environments on the Earth. With this background, the special problems animals face that are related to "habitat" become apparent. This adds heightened awareness of ecosystems and the plight of a wide variety of endangered animals.

The attractive layout with an easy-to-read vocabulary level (approximately grade 4) makes these books appealing to a wide audience. The interesting, informative text with the accompanying glossary and index adds to the usefulness of these books as school research sources.

Recommended.
