Every summer Matte visits her Uncle George on his farm. Matte helps Uncle George look after his twenty-eight goats, and watches him divine water with a willow wand. When Uncle George breaks his arm during a dry spell and cannot find water for the goats, Matte decides to help out. This is gentle story of caring and love, not only between generations but also of neighbour for neighbour and human for animal.

Sue Ann Alderson in her thirteenth boot has created another admirable female character in Matte. She is strong, independent and intelligent and will show young readers that children can certainly make a difference in the lives of adults, sure as strawberries.

The water-colour illustrations by Karen Reczuch complement the story perfectly. Gentle hues wash nearly every page and the characterizations given to Matte and Uncle George are wonderful. The goats are marvellous, too!

This delightful book is recommended for purchase to be used with children ages four to six.
