These books couldn't be considered necessities but they could add fun to the routine tasks of brushing teeth and learning to tie shoelaces. They are the first in the "Step-by-Step" series designed to help children master skills.

Brush Them Bright tells the story of Thomas' brand new tooth and his struggle to remember to brush it. His mom suggests he use a sticker system and he invents a rap song to remind himself. The story is a good read. The illustrations show a warm family environment and capture the joy of a little boy proud of his accomplishment. The book comes with an activity board and stickers to help the reader keep track of morning and night brushing, and a toothbrush.

In Lace Them Up, Lisa gets a new pair of shoes with laces and is determined to learn how to tie them herself. When she asks her dad and grandparents when they learned to tie their shoes, we get a glimpse of other countries and customs in footwear. Charming, colourful illustrations bring Lisa's world to life. The book comes with a pair of green and yellow laces and an activity board with easy instructions for beginners and a chance to practice.

The books would be fun and a good reference for an individual child. If purchased for a school or library, the toothbrush and stickers could only be used as ideas for the child to try at home. Primary and grade 1 teachers could use the Lace Them Up board over and over again with their students.
