Benjamin is a very special little boy — not because he can make himself especially thin or fat and not because he can jump especially high or run especially fast. He is special because he uses his eyes, ears and nose especially well.

When he tells the other children about the sunny yellow daisies in the field down the street, the sigh of the wind as it blows through the reeds by the pond, and the wonderful sweet smell of his baby sister when she gets out of her bath, they laugh at him. But when Benjamin explains how wonderful these simple pleasures are, some of the other children begin to find special things too — like the "promising creak" of a mailbox and the "delicious aroma of cookies."

Benjamin is the late author's only book. Her simple, repetitive story and beautiful colour photographs celebrate the joyful pleasures our senses can bring to us if only we take time to use them.

Highly recommended.
