Jeanette and her cat Kitty Doyle live downtown in an apartment above a delicatessen. Every day Kitty Doyle walks Jeanette to school and meets her at the corner after school. However, in the excitement of the first big snowstorm, Jeanette forgets about her cat and goes to a friend's house after school. Luckily, all's well that ends well, and the frozen Kitty Doyle is rescued and suffers no ill effects from the experience. This book has a lovely sense of family duty and responsibility. Everyone has a job to perform to keep the deli running, even the cat. The snowstorm is softly detailed in Maryann Kovalski's illustrations. In the scenes where Jeanette is searching for her cat as it gets darker, one can almost feel the storm intensifying and the snow swirling around. This book is a real winner. It is not only an interesting winter story, but it would tie in well with many other themes (friendship, loyalty, responsibility) for discussion. Highly recommended.
