The story opens with Jash admiring the open prairie from the seat on his horseplow at his family's new farm in Manitoba. As his mind wanders, he recalls his life in the Ukraine. His memories are of a productive farm and an orderly Mennonite home before the revolution began. As Germans, they were the first to suffer the attacks of the Red Army.Soldiers settled in their home, raiding food supplies and spreading typhoid throughout the village. Food became scarce and starvation and the fear of death were constant preoccupations, but the family persevered, their faith holding them together. When the children were forbidden to pray and told that God was dead, Jash's parents were prompted to accept an offer to immigrate to Canada. This is not a fast-paced story and the author often allows lengthy descriptions to interfere with the suspense of the family's struggle to survive. However, the book may appeal to young readers with an interest in historical novels, and teachers may find it a useful supplement to a unit on the Russian Revolution.
