Green Giants: Rainforests of the Pacific Northwest adds a fifth title to the "Earth Care Books" series published by Ground wood/ Douglas & Mclntyre.

Author Tom Parkin identifies the coastal rain forests of the world and isolates the ocean-facing temperate forests of British Columbia for his particular attention. He provides a clear description of and introduction to this ecosystem and follows this with a detailed breakdown of its complexities.

Living trees are discussed, the canopy layer is described, and the functions of standing dead trees (snags), rotting logs (nurse logs), and logs in streams are listed. Wildlife, birds and fish and their interrelationships with the forest are reviewed.

Each chapter is well illustrated throughout with a complement of colour photography, charts and maps. The book's concluding chapter discusses the hazards to the forest caused by logging operations, past and present.

Parkin's writing is restrained and he lists possible options for the future without vilifying either the lumber companies or forest workers. Parkin provides very accessible paper conservation activities as well as larger-scale projects to preserve and enhance awareness of these rain forests. In all, Green Giants provides information on Canada's coastal habitat in a well-organized and positive format.

Green Giants provides a solid introduction to the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest in an accessible, non-judgemental context.

Recommended.
