BRIGHT SUNNY DAYS

Bright Sunny Days, the follow-up to Markus' release Big Beautiful World (EQ Productions, 1990), contains eighteen songs. These selections incorporate a variety of themes, such as self-esteem, multicultural acceptance, and protecting our environment. The cassette also includes several/Nil songs such as 'That Tarzan Dude" as well as some oldies like "Swinging on a Star." Markus provides mellow easy listening music for children. A grade 3 audience thoroughly enjoyed the upbeat songs like "I Like Rock and Roll" and, with the song's repetitive words and phrases, were able to sing along. However, the message-type selections didn't capture the children's interest, partly because of the slower beat. The instructional guide provides teachers with suggestions for a variety of classroom activities such as language arts, art and drama. Lyrics and chords are also included. This information allows the teacher to select a song to serve as a focal point for a specific topic such as food ("The Farmer's Song"). Unfortunately, some of the "theme" songs do not initially appeal to children in the suggested age range. Bright Sunny Days provides a pleasant listening experience for children. It has the added dimension of being a teaching tool for some current topics. This cassette is recommended as an optional purchase for libraries and should appeal to children from pre-school to age 9. If the tape is to be used for educational purposes, the teacher's guide should be purchased.
