CIP Grades 1 to 3/Ages 6 to 8 Reviewed by Catherine McInerney Volume 20 Number 4 1992 September As I am not a regular Munsch fan, I was very reluctant to review this, his latest book. However, I found this book to be average. The story is set in Canada, in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland. The distinctive setting is an excellent choice. Teachers will find this book useful for theme units on Canada. The story also has a non-stereotypical relationship: a girl and her father go fishing. Like most Munsch parents, the father is not willing to acknowledge the intelligence and resourcefulness of his child. He sees only the limits of her size. The parent is never completely right in this author's work, however, and the little girl manages to catch the largest fish. The father's greed leads to the accidental capture of a whale. His downfall is complete when Kristi's mother, another strong female character, throws him into the ocean, cooks the cod, and has a party. The illustrations are in lovely warm tones of orange and yellow, with touches of maritime blue and greens for contrast. The simplicity of their outline is complementary to the story's setting.
