Bubbles make an excellent theme for a story hour, or they can be used as part of the science lesson. This story is an excellent accompaniment to either type of program. In the story a boy named David manages to make a bubble so large that it engulfs his neighbourhood. David manages to gain control of the bubble and, by popping it, saves his world. The illustrations by Bob Beeson contain bright, funny animals and neighbours. Intricate details such as signs provide additional reading matter, and will keep the reader looking through the illustrations for a long time. In the imaginative text there is a wonderful choice of words such as galumph (which, to the uninitiated, is the noise that a bubble makes when it swallows something). A box-like chart on alternate pages lists what the bubble has taken in already, like a score-board. This book contains a recipe for inexpensive homemade bubble solution, and also some suggestions on how to make bubble wands. Catherine McInerney is a teacher-librarian in London, Ontario.
