Volume 20 Number 4 1992 September Jessie's cousin Thomas writes to her of his exciting city life with its concerts, video arcades, movies, sporting events, etc. When Jessie's mother suggests that she invite him for a visit, Jessie looks out over her island home in search of something equally interesting to tell Thomas. She sees a fascinating world of endless variety - bald eagles, harbour seals, shy otters, tasty berries, wonderful beaches, trees and cliffs to climb, whales to watch. She tells of days spent exploring, fishing, swimming, canoeing. In closing her letter, Jessie writes, "And when you come to visit my island, Thomas, you might never ever want to leave." Sheryl McFarlane's simple story celebrates Canada's west coast life and reminds us of the joyful pleasures to be found in the natural world far from the formal events of city life. Sheena Lott's beautiful water-colours draws us into the story - we can almost smell the sea breeze, hear the sea birds' cries, and taste the salty air. I would go to Jessie's island any time.
