Sharon, Lois and Bram's latest musical book offers thirty-five songs related, rather fancifully, to various letters of the alphabet (some letters get several songs, and some letters share a song). In addition to the songs listed in the table of contents, there are several other nursery rhymes, jokes, tongue-twisters and other snippets, all deftly inserted between illustrations and music. There is no overall index, so readers will have to discover these extras by themselves as they go along.

The songs are an engaging mixture of traditional children's songs, camp songs, folk songs, and a touch of Tin Pan Alley. Not all of the songs in this book have music, and the music that is given only has the melody and chords. Sharon, Lois and Bram's Mother Goose ¹ had full accompaniment for all songs, and Elephant Jam ² (also by Sharon, Lois and Bram) for almost all pieces. It is unfortunate that full versions are not included here, this feature greatly increases the usefulness of a book like this.

Nevertheless, this volume would still be an attractive addition to home, school and public libraries. It can serve as a picturebook, an ABC, a nursery rhyme book, a music book, and, of course, a sing-along companion to the recording of the same name, which is also available.

The book is illustrated lavishly throughout in a cheerful, light-hearted style by Kim LaFave.

Recommended for young children up to approximately age eight, and also for parents and teachers, especially music teachers.
