Adrian Volume 20 Number 3 1992 May A collection of short essays edited by Leo Heaps, son of A.A. Heaps, one of the founders of the CCF party, this book has short biographies of some of the more prominent members of the party, including J.S. Woodsworth, M.J. Coldwell, Tommy Douglas, Agnes Macphail and David Lewis. It also gives a brief history of the develop­ment of the CCF/NDP in each of the territories and provinces of Canada, as well as a short introduction to the roots of the party, the party and its relations with labour, and thoughts about the future of a social democratic party and social democracy in Canada. The chapters are written by a number of prominent historians and journalists like Pierre Berton and K. McNaught as well as by party faithfuls like Audrey McLaughlin and Ed Broadbent. While information on most of the provinces is to the late 1980s, it is unfortunate that the chapter on Quebec ended in 1968, thus omitting the election of Quebec's first NDP candidate, Phil Edmonston, to the 1 louse of Commons. This book is neither analytical nor critical. Of limited use to high school students requiring information about the NDP and its founders. There is a bibliography but no index. Donna J.
