Like a TV Hero tells an urban adventure of three grade 6 kids on their way to holding their first soapbox derby. Kris Higgins lives in an apartment with his little sister Lisa and his mom and dad. He idolizes TV characters... strong, brilliant heroes, beautiful, daring women, but most of all... loving, devoted parents. His life is not like TV. His parents arc seldom there. They work long hours, party elsewhere and often leave Kris to care for Lisa, without even enough food for a meal. Kris has a habit of talking to his dead grandmother, asking for her advice or help. The plan to hold a soapbox derby runs up against opposition from local bullies. But with the help of his friend Alphie Como, Garbage Harry, a man who lives by selling other people's garbage, and a daring Chinese girl who calls herself Charley Fong, Kris outwits the bad guys and turns his life around just like a TV hero. The large print makes the book an easy read. The characters arc well developed - down-and-out people who fight back. The action is fast paced.
