Writing Picture Books: What Works and What Doesn't begins, "So you want to write a picture book?" Kathy Stinson, author of several picture-books, outlines in a zippy question-and-answer method how to go about doing just that: writing a picture-book. She states, 'There is probably no other single thing you can do to help you learn to write well than reading good writing in the area in which you arc interested." She goes on to encourage prospective writers to avoid the pitfalls of using glaring stereotypes, cliches, anachronisms, moralizing, and authoritarian or demeaning language. In outlining these hazardous obstacles, Stinson effectively uses examples of other successful picture-books, many Canadian, we are happy to note. Writing Picture Books is a short book, sixty-four pages with illustrations and an extensive bibliography. While it is not a complete or in-depth discourse on the whole process of writing for young readers, this slim volume would not be an overwhelming read for a senior high school student or adult novice writer interested in exploring this challenging field.
