Ten-year-old Dan Quinn's summer plans have just been destroyed. Instead of baseball, summer camp, and the Sports Card Show featuring Kelly Gruber, he, his younger sister, and his mother have to go off to the family farm because his grandfather is sick. The situation deteriorates when he learns that his grandfather has cancer (his father, Mike, died of it), and the family farm will have to be sold.

During a visit to the hospital, Dan learns that his father collected baseball cards, and he realizes that the farm could be saved if they could be found. Teaming up with his sister and Julie, a neighbour his own age, they form the MCC (Mike's Card Club), named after his father. Clue after clue leads to a dead end, and even a dying message from his grandfather is no help until Aunt Susan, who has come for the funeral, clarifies it. The card collection is indeed valuable, and Dan's summer ends on a slightly more positive note than it began.

Written in the vernacular, the story has woven into it information on the Sky Dome, on sports cards, and so on, to heighten interest. There is even a foreword by Kelly Gruber. A light read, despite the issue of death, which is treated very superficially. Suitable for the paperback rack.
