Based on the television series "Northwood," this book tells the story of Kirk, a troubled and rebellious teen. Thrown out by his father, rejected by his girlfriend and still smarting from the death of his dare-devil friend, he runs away to the big city of Northwood, where he is reluctantly taken in by his grandmother. Unfortunately, Kirk soon learns that running away does not solve his problems and he quickly finds himself in much deeper trouble. It takes the unexpected intervention of Maria, a girl he both befriended and disappointed, to save him from himself. Fast moving and simply told, this slight story should find a ready audience with followers of the television series. Although Weir has infused his characters' dialogue with believable realism, his handling of Maria's actions and Kirk's subsequent change of heart at the end stretches credibility. In all, the didactic plot misses the humorous touch of his earlier books (The Video Kid and The Video Kid Rides Again).
