A Cat of Artimus Pride revolves around an eleven-year-old girl named Claire, who is determined to build the best entry in the Heritage Day Parade in order to win tickets to Funtastic Park. While she is building her entry, she meets a talking cat named Cortez, who claims to be over one hundred years old and on a quest to recover the buried diary of his friend Artimus Pride. Claire and her friend Griff and his sister Amy and Cortez embark on a challenging adventure. They dig for buried treasure in the middle of the night, scavenge the creek for materials to build their parade entry, and dare to enter the backyard of the meanest kid in town. You are immediately lured into the story by the introduction of a talking cat. From that point on, the story is fast paced and full of action, humour and surprises. I recommend it because I believe that young readers will enjoy this story and teachers are sure to be pleased by the response of their students if they read it aloud to them. Hazel Hutchins manages to blend two timely topics - the exploration of our heritage and the environmental issue of garbage dumping - in an action-packed and humorous adventure.
