The table of contents of Worlds Unrealized: Short Stories of Adolescence by Canadian Writers (two volumes) reads like a who's who of Canadian fiction. Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, Morley Callaghan, Mavis Gallant, Hugh Garner, Gabrielle Roy, Margaret Laurence, Rohinton Mistry, Sinclair Lewis, Guy Vanderhaegue, Sandra Birdsell, W.P. Kinsella and Alden Nowlan are only a few of the outstanding writers included in this rich collection.

Editors Andrew Garrod and Janet Webster spent six years looking for the stories that ultimately were chosen for these two volumes. Twenty of the stories were written by men, nineteen by women; I he writers represent every province in Canada.

The stories are arranged by theme — sexual awakening, family relationships, friends and the peer group, and loss of innocence (Volume 1); identity, religion and values, the dark side of adolescence, and transition to adulthood (Volume 2) — but many stories could fit in a number of categories. The thematic breakdown imposes structure on the books without limiting the scope of the stories.

The short stories in this collection are of consistently high quality, and can be appreciated and enjoyed by adults and teenagers alike. Worlds Unrealized would be a valuable addition to any junior high or secondary school or class library — as an introduction to Canadian literature, the short story or themes of adolescence, or simply as a good read.
