Volume 20 Number 1
The Dreamland, a big production, uses twenty speaking roles, singers and a band in its portrayal of the end of a Muskoka dance pavilion in 1966. Flashbacks to its glory days introduce the music and dance of the 1930s and also reveal a tragic and violent event. Girls in the Gang concentrates on four women and the members of Toronto's notorious Boyd gang with whom they were connected. Both plays present challenges to the reader: Dreamland has younger and older versions of major characters on stage together, and it can be confusing keeping track of who's with whom in the Boyd gang. Reading the lyrics is less satisfactory than hearing the songs, although their effectiveness as counterpoint to the action is clear. Young adults will enjoy both Girls in the Gang with its wit and gangster movie atmosphere and The Dreamland and what it reveals about human relationships. Highly recommended.
