Two separate stories are included in this book written for the beginning reader. The first story called "Lemonade" tells the adventures of Goldsworthy and Mort, who try to sell lemonade on a hot summer day, When no one shows up to buy their lemonade, the animals buy from each other and quickly use up the drink. The second story, "Ice Cream," takes place at the beach. Mort tries to guess Goldsworthy's favourite ice cream flavour. He returns time after time with different flavours of ice cream but doesn't get it right until he drops the last one on the ground and coats the ice cream with ants.

Children will enjoy the bright and colourful illustrations by Linda Hendry. The large print and wide spacing of text make it easy for beginning readers to follow. The paperback format gives it a feel of more sophisticated books, which beginning readers enjoy.

However, in an attempt to write for the beginning reader, the author sacrifices the rich story-telling language of literature for one that uses a controlled vocabulary, naive dialogue, and simple language structures. Books like this written especially for the beginning reader do have some place in developing their literacy skills but only as practice or reinforcement material. Children quickly tire of a steady diet of these books and can lose interest in reading.
