Volume 19 Number 4 1991 September These are the last four of the twelve titles in the "Schmecks Appeal" cook­book series, which combines the best from Staebler's Food That Really Schmecks (McGraw, 1968), More Food That Really Schmecks (McClelland & Stewart, 1979), and Schmecks Appeal. Recipe arrangement is very helpful for the hurried cook: cakes, for instance, are arranged by size and type of pan required, and Lunches and Suppers has separate sections for vegetarians, singles and loners, and cooks whose supper plans include leftover meat. Using ingredients on hand in most kitchens, even beginning cooks can produce meals that are as nutritious as they are appetizing. And Staebler's commentary is warm and personal, whether pointing out the advantages (financial and flavour-wise) of making your own crackers, or encouraging the timid to make singin' hinnies. The series is handsomely produced, with good large print, ingredient listings in bold face, and bindings that will allow the book to lie flat (with a little encouragement). With all its admirable qualities, however, the "Schmecks Appeal" series has a drawback that makes it impossible to recommend it for school libraries - it is non-metric. Pat Bolger, Renfrew, Ont.
