This information picture-book is the second in the series entitled "In My Neighbourhood" written by Paulette Bourgeois. The author tells the story of what happens to people's garbage from the time it is picked up - where it goes and what happens to it after it leaves the neighbourhood. Children will be intrigued to learn interesting and informative facts from Sam, the garbage collector, who relates this information in both a humorous and entertaining storylike fashion.

Readers will learn, for example, that the average family throws out about 200 large bags of trash in one year and a garbage truck holds more than five tonnes of crushed garbage. The story of a family who follows the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) is described in detail along with much more. The information presented will be relevant to children who live in all parts of Canada from cities to rural areas and along the coastline of our country.

A former journalist who now specializes in writing children's picturebooks and non-fiction, Bourgeois has written a truly informative and well-researched book that will help children expand their knowledge in a thoroughly enjoyable manner. The author is also well known for her "Franklin" picturebooks, which have sold over a million copies world-wide.

Kim LaFave, winner of the Governor General's award, the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Medal and the Ruth Schwartz Award for his work in children's books, has made the story come alive with his accurate, colourful, detailed and sometimes humorous illustrations, which serve to enhance and enrich the story.

I highly recommend this information picture-book as an ideal choice for every pre-school and Primary classroom.
