This story and its illustrations depict life in the north during the four seasons. It is told by Grandfather Jonas to his grandson Byron, and throughout the story Grandfather highlights many aspects of the Dene culture that were vital in the past and are still important today.

Byron through the Seasons was produced by the Dene children of La Loche, Saskatchewan, with help from their teachers, local advisors and elders. It is the second book in this unique Byron series. It follows Byron and His Balloon: An English-Chipewyan Counting Book.

This book would be helpful for anyone interested in learning about native peoples and the way they traditionally lived. The students' illustrations are very colourful and give an accurate picture of Dene life. The last few pages of the book provide more background material for the dialogue and illustrations from the story, e.g., tanning procedures, bannock making, preserving food, medicine and health, feasts, making soap, smoking tobacco, and houses (the heat, windows, light, beds). This supplementary information is not only interesting but useful for any student who may be doing some research on the Dene culture.

Highly recommended .
