Canadian children's authors have been touring public libraries and schools throughout the country over the past number of years, often as part of the Canada Council readings programme. Boys and girls and adults are always delighted to meet "a real, live author" (or illustrator). Perhaps the next best thing to a face-to-face meeting would be to view one of these "Meet the Author" videotapes, if the Camilla Gryski entry in the series is a fair sample.

Gryski's background, research methods and family life are all explored here. Throughout the tape, her bubbly personality and ability to fascinate audiences with her nimble hands and her creativity come through. The film investigates the history of string games, allowing Gryski to put forward her interest in preserving them as folklore. She may not be what we usually think of as a creative writer, but she is certainly an artist.

The production is colourful and well edited and it moves well. The author's books, including a forthcoming publication on hand games and jokes, are put front and centre, with a nod to their excellent artwork by Tom Sankey.

Recommended for resource centres, schools and public libraries where there is an interest in Canadian books.
