Volume 19 Number 3 1991 May In this, the second Annick book by author Brenda Silsbe, Mr. Hall has a very difficult time deciding what colour to paint his house. Different things surrounding him give him ideas, but each time the colour he chooses turns out to be not quite right. In desperation, Mr. Hall uses all of the left-over paint and paints the house multi-coloured. Everyone likes it - but the house may need to be painted again soon. The illustrations in the book feature bright and vivid colours reminiscent of the work of Gail Gibbons. Each page of text is completed by a large panel illustration of the house and a narrow bottom panel featuring a related activity. Colour coordinated borders joint the text and illustration pages together. The story is highly readable - the text is a pattern which subtly alters with each repetition. The time frame of the story is well established in the draw­ings. The book also contains rich vocabulary, e.g., action words like collapsed and nouns such as petunia and begonia. The ending of this book is left up to the imagination of the child. This makes the book ideal for follow-up activity such as writing an ending or painting a picture of what Mr. Hall's house will look like next. Catherine McInerney, London, Ont.
