Professor Gutteridge of the Faculty of Education, University of Western Ontario, here discusses the teaching of novels in the intermediate years of high school (grades 7 to 10) and provides study-guides for two novels. He argues for a teaching based on student-response, with the classroom teacher prompting and mediating the specific discussion of a novel's action, characters and themes.

Gutteridge declares himself against a "literary" approach, evidently believing that students understand tacitly the rhetorical nature of the novel but do not at this stage wish to engage themselves in literary questions (or are incapable of doing so): the natural power of the story must be allowed to work untrammelled. He is also opposed to side uses of the novel for exercises in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, etc.

He clearly believes that reading a novel is essentially a private experience and that, while there must be a common classroom discussion of this "core" material, the student's sense of personal involvement should also be preserved. For this purpose, he advocates the use of the personal journal by students and provides a set of rules to govern the use and marking of such journals. English teachers are bound to be interested in these ideas. A study guide is provided for Cam Hubert's Dreamspeaker (Avon, 1980) (for grades 7 and 8) and a resource kit for Anne Frank Diary of a Young Girl (for grades 9 and 10).
