Life at the Seashore offers young readers an attractive, informative and fun-filled book about the seashore. The author uses several techniques to provide information about life along the shoreline. On some pages readers are first asked a question. At other times, facts about the ocean or its inhabitants follow a bold-faced heading. And for further variety, simple experiments and projects about the sea are suggested. All the information is accompanied by bright, colourful illustrations that entice the child to examine carefully the text in another visual format. Questions about the pictures themselves are sometimes provided. There is no table of contents or index.

Non-fiction books for young readers need to provide interesting information and at the same time be open-ended to encourage the natural inquisitiveness of children. Life at the Seashore does exactly this. Its attractive format and colourful pictures invite the child to peruse each page carefully. The bits of ocean trivia as well as the easy-to-read text provide the reader with a substantial amount of information about the seashore - from seashells to sea lions. Further interest is added by the suggested experiments and simple projects.

Even for those readers far away from the sea, this book offers a fascinating look at a fascinating part of our world, the seashore.
