Rainbow Wings is the eagle child whose colourful plumage fades after drinking from a polluted lake. In order to regain his rainbow colours, the eagle child must visit the "little people of the four directions." The Earth Secret, the Water Secret, the Sun Secret and the Love Wind Secret impart special knowledge to help restore the rainbow colours. Della Burford's message is "to love and protect the Earth," and incorporated cleverly into her mythical story about Rainbow Wings are practical suggestions to help save the environment, such as planting trees, recycling garbage, using alternate forms of energy, and organic gardening.

Each page of this colourfully illustrated story has beautiful line drawings of the eagle child and the "little people" who help restore the rainbow colours to his feathers. Sparkling background washes add to the illustrations to provide a unique visual treat for both children and adults, as they learn together how to stop polluting the earth. As David Suzuki writes in his foreword, "As you soar along with Rainbow Wings, you and your child will learn that it will take each and everyone's small efforts to get us there." The Magical Earth Secrets has an important message for all of us.
