Volume 19 Number 2 1991 March Animal stories have always captured the interest of young readers. Grizzly Cub: Five Years in the Life of a Bear is no exception. As its title implies, the book provides a true account of five years of a grizzly bear's life with a chapter de­voted to each year. The author, a National Park Service (U. S.) ranger, introduces us to Little Stony, a young grizzly cub, and tells a story that needs to be told. Through Little Stony's adventures we learn of the natural history of Denali National Park and that of the grizzly bear in particular. We also learn of the interaction between bears and people, and this in essence is the whole point of the book. The photographs that accompany the text were taken by the author and are excellent. This book is not indexed although it does contain good factual information. This is an American publication but the problems of wildlife it shares are the same in Canada. The author has managed to convey the complexities and conflicting inter­ests that play havoc when humans encroach on a large animal's wilderness. Little Stony's eventual demise starts with a raid on an unprotected garbage can. Over three chapters, we learn that this leads to his death. The author doesn't take a strong stand and at times seems to come across as an apologist for the need of parks to balance public access and wildlife protection. Regardless of the lack of a clear resolve to save North America's quickly diminishing wilderness and wildlife, Grizzly Cub is a story that readers will find enjoyable and moving. Stan R.
