Stevens, two of his children, and a number of his friends and former employees. Brock, a friend of Stevens' son, was intrigued by B.D.'s involvement in the construction and renovation of churches and has made this the main focus of the book. B.D. Stevens was a successful contractor and developer in the Halifax region. He was also a religious man whose faith guided his life, and who inspired many by his example. From the mid-point of his career until his death in 1989 at age eighty-nine, he devoted a great deal of energy to building churches. Throughout the Maritimes, more than thirty congrega­tions, representing at least three de­nominations, benefited from his dedica­tion to helping others. The anecdotal style, brief chapters and attractive design make this an easy-to-read book. Brock's decorative sketches of churches are in keeping with the focus, and the family portraits reproduced are also appropriate. A map would be helpful for those unfa­miliar with Maritime geography. No index is provided. The Man Who Built Churches can be read as Christian biography, church history. Maritime history or for insight into the construction industry and the nature of entrepreneurship.
