This series of delightful board books will be sure to elicit smiles from adults and toddlers alike. The four nursery rhymes chosen for this series are the same ones that parents have sung and recited to their children for hundreds of years. The tradition of handing down the telling of nursery rhymes from generation to generation is sure to be continued when new books with such wonderful illustrations as these are published.

These selections are very catchy, easy-to-remember rhymes that young children will love to repeat. Language development, body awareness ("This Little Piggy"), rhythm proficiency and auditory discrimination are a few of the benefits acquired from these favourite nursery rhymes. Moira Kemp's illustrations are playful and appealing with their whimsical characters and bright colours. The tops of the pages have die-cut outlines in the shape of an animal's head. For example, Hickory, Dickory, Dock has the shape of a mouse's head and ears in each of its six pages.

There is plenty of detail and much attention paid to fitting the art to the particular line of verse that occupies every full-page illustration. The animals and people are illustrated with humour and liveliness, which will appeal to preschool children. Infants will be able to be rough with these sturdy books and yet have many years of listening and looking pleasure left. For toddlers, the flow and rhythm of these nursery rhymes may be slightly broken up or stilted by having only one line of verse per full page. That same balance of text and illustration may be perfect for the Infant and reader who want to play "This Little Piggy" on each little toe.

All in all, Moira Kemp has provided both child and adult reader with a marvelous and imaginative background for these well-known and well-loved nursery rhymes.

Highly recommended.
