Mia Johnson begins by saying that everyone from an artist to someone who can't fingerpaint can leach his or her child to draw if you enjoy doing things with your child. This book is a delightful guide to doing just that. Her practical activities with everyday material lead everyone from expert to novice through each step of the learning process. She gives enough background and technical information and yet keeps her material at a very readable, non-threatening level.

Her introduction includes a description of children by year and what they could and should accomplish in this area. The chapters are arranged by concept. The ten chapters include lines, patterns, texture, light and dark, shading, shapes, proportion, point of view, movement and distance. Each chapter also includes illustrations of an informational nature and children's drawings. Statements written by children of all ages are interspersed throughout the book.

Practical, easy-to-do activities are found in each chapter. How to lead the child through the activity and then how to discuss the activity with the child are included. This would be excellent for new and experienced parents as well as for teachers in Primary and middle grades. The book concludes with a glossary and an index.

The format also makes this a recommended purchase. The print is large and easy to read. The margins are wide and almost invite one to make notes. The illustrations are well done and varied in nature.

Mia Johnson has degrees in painting and art history, and she has over twenty years experience teaching adults and children to draw.
