Volume 19 Number 1 1991 January Sounds from the Sea is a collection of thirty-two interviews with men and women who served in the Canadian navy in peace and war between 1910 and 1985. The voice clips are presented in chronological order and are placed in context by a lively, concise narrative and snipits of the songs of the day. In particular, there is a humorous song entitled "You'll Get Used to it," which presents a sailor's view of the changes from civilian life in the Depression, to the outbreak of war, joining up, life at sea, and finally the arrival of peace. The program, which was originally produced for CBC Radio in 1985 to recognize the seventy-fifth anniversary of the navy, is reproduced unchanged. It fills an important niche in the history of Canada's navy and of the two world wars because it provides personal accounts of the experiences of the people who were there, in their own voices. It also deliberately chooses equal numbers of officers and "lower deck" men and women to give a balanced account of what the navy and the wars meant to all who served. High schools and libraries serving the general public should seriously consider purchasing this tape if they don't already have other audio collec­tions of the experiences of Canadians in the wars.
