This production sets out to examine the effects of the last Ice Age on the coastline of Atlantic Canada. The approach taken by the producer is fairly conventional, in that Jay Ingram appears on camera frequently explaining various aspects of the topic and subsequently as narrator. While not as wildly imaginative as, say, the classic Bill Mason film Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes (1968), this video does manage to present the information in an interesting fashion.

Some of the scenes are quite striking, particularly a side trip to Pond Inlet in the eastern Arctic, where the camera follows two scientists on a summer expedition. The technical details such as camera work, editing and sound are handled in a very professional manner. The Recent Ice Age makes extensive use of the helicopter as a camera platform to demonstrate geological features that can only be seen properly from this vantage point. Numerous graphics assist in illustrating the details that cannot be photographed.

This production is part of the "Geology of Atlantic Canada" series produced for the Atlantic Geoscience Society and funded in part by the Non-theatrical Production Fund of the Department of Communications. Naturally, most of the examples in this production are from the Atlantic region. However, the basic principles of glaciation are well explained and this video should therefore be welcomed across the country.
