FOCUS NORTH: AUDREY MCLAUGHLIN, A LEADERSHIP CAMPAIGN
CBC Enterprises, 1989. VHS cassette, 28:50 min. $109.00
Volume 19 Number 1
Audrey McLaughlin, A Leadership Campaign purports to describe McLaughlin's rise to the leadership of the federal New Democratic Party. In the short time available this is simply not possible. Instead, "Focus North" provides seven minutes of highlights of the NDP convention interspersed with cuts to the Yukon to give a "northern point of view." There is no analysis of McLaughlin's campaign or of her strategy during the convention. The remaining half of the program is devoted to a question-and-answer session between the host of "Focus North" and McLaughlin conducted at the conclusion of the convention. None of the questions is particularly insightful and McLaughlin's answers reveal little of her personality. The program is a study of neither a political convention nor the rise of a political leader. Instead, it provides a "moment in time" snapshot of the new NDP leader. As such it lacks breadth and depth, and it is already dated. As with most CBC productions it is well organized and authoritative, but it is only a news report and accordingly it will have limited use in the classroom.
