Set in cottage country, this children's novel is the story of three twelve-year- olds and their search for a Lock Ness style monster that has been sighted near a local resort.

An action-oriented adventure story, it will appeal to many young readers looking for a quick, easy read. The child protagonists are stubborn enough and independent enough to attract the interest of many similar-age readers.

Justin and his two friends find themselves attacked when they investigate the mysterious monster. Rather than tell adults what has happened, they decide to follow their intuition in secret and unravel the mystery that has confounded the adults.

Needless to say co-incidence and fortuitous timing abound in this story, as they do in most such works. However, the characters are well enough developed to make the story believable and worth following for the intended audience.

The Mystery of the Turtle Lake Monster is Mayer's first novel. As a book intended to appeal to budding adolescents it is successful. The general public would be well served if she continues in the genre.
