Nothing sells in Canada like hockey. And that includes books. And anyone who watches hockey on television knows who Brian McFarlane is. McFarlane has been with "Hockey Night in Canada" for over twenty-five years, so when Brian McFarlane writes a book about hockey it will likely be popular.

Hockey: The Book for Kids is by Brian McFarlane and is about hockey. This is not a textbook treatment, however, but rather a pot-pourri. For example, here we have a two-page spread on equipment but next we have two pages of hockey players' superstitions. McFarlane has mixed fact with trivia in a pleasant and enjoyable way.

The book has no apparent organization other than beginning with some general remarks about and definitions of hockey. There is an index, though, and that helps pinpoint specific pieces of information.

The book will likely appeal to the eight- to twelve-year-old child interested in hockey. Every page has one or more illustrations. Page lay-outs are designed to encourage browsing and fast reading. Children can start and stop reading anywhere in the book and still find it interesting and informative.

As stated, this is not meant to be an instruction book of hockey, Rather, it is a leisure book meant to be informative. The information is accurate and is presented in a straightforward and simple manner.

This book will be useful in elementary school libraries and in public libraries.
