Having just read a half dozen books on saving our environment (see "Our Big Beautiful World: The Green Revolution Comes to Kids' Books" in the September 1990 issue of CM) I was tempted to write that Environmental Tips was just more of the same ideas. Then I paused and thought, this is not fair and certainly not accurate. It is true that the ideas for saving our environment are basically simple and known to many people, so almost all books on this topic will be somewhat repetitive. However, there is a change of viewpoint and presentation in this book that makes it a useful reference.

The nine chapter headings make it simple to use for lesson preparation or assignments. These headings are The 3 R's," "Household Garbage," "Gardening," "Energy," "Water," "Food," "Household Hazards," 'Transportation," and "Kids for Ecology." Each chapter starts with an introduction to the problems that exist today and then follows up with specific ideas on what each of us can do to alleviate these concerns. The black-and-white illustrations add meaning and humour and might readily be used to introduce the topics to a class.

The book includes a directory of national headquarters of environmental organizations, with addresses, listed by province, a reference list, an index and five blank pages one might use for notes. All of these features add significantly to its usefulness as a resource tool. Most of the pages of each chapter are devoted to tips and recipes for saving our environment. This is certainly a useful and relevant book for the home or library shelf.
