Joanne Barwise has developed a book to help young readers identify tracks they might find in the sand or snow. The author's experience as an outdoor educator and teacher is evident in the unique format of the book. Step-by-step elimination keys enable the reader to determine easily the animal that made specific tracks.

Animal Tracks of Western Canada is designed to make track reading a fascinating "detective" game. Thirty-seven mammals ranging from the house cat to the snowshoe hare to the black bear are included. Tracking terms are explained and tracking tips are provided to help the reader identify patterns. Once the young tracker has identified the pattern and the animal that made the tracks through the "elimination" technique, the reader turns to the full page of information about the animal and how it travels.

Further information on the tracks is also provided. Clear black-and-white illustrations by naturalist illustrator Ozlem Boyacioglu enhance the text. They give a realistic picture of each animal, its habitat and its prints, and a map showing where it is found in western Canada. A table of contents, instructions on how to use the book, charts on "What You Might See and Where," an index, a bibliography, and pages for "Tracking Notes" are also included.

Children in the upper elementary grades could use this book independently but with adult supervision even the very young child could appreciate this guide. The book (11 x 15 cm) fits comfortably into one's hands. A metric ruler on the back cover enables the tracker to measure the prints easily. Animal Tracks of Western Canada is a useful guide for beginner trackers of all ages.
