Although this book is dedicated to the children of Newfoundland, Labrador and the Quebec Lower North Shore, it is evident that children from everywhere could appreciate the poems in Wind in My Pocket. The elements of nature and experiences that the children in these areas may encounter, for example, the wind, grass, river, snowbirds and blizzards, are the subject of the poetry in this book. The poems follow the order of the seasons and occurrences within them as well as children's fun throughout the year.

The illustrations by Shawn Steffler evoke a northern feeling and generate accurate ideas about what a small community life-style is like. Her simple and colourful interpretation of Bryan Obed's poetry is lovely. They certainly make a good team.

It is my impression that there would be great appeal to this book. Children in the upper Primary grades would be able to read the poetry independently, and at the younger levels the poems could be read aloud. In school, teachers could incorporate these poems into any themes on seasons to encourage writing and reading poetry. The print is a suitable size for students.

It is evident that Bryan Obed has spent time in the isolated areas of northeastern Canada and has a genuine understanding of the life in these parts.
